A New Castle daycare worker has been arrested after he allegedly sodomized a three-year-old.
Aaron D. New, 34, was arrested and charged with child molesting, a class A felony. According to court documents, the alleged offense took place between Jan. 8, 2012 and April 13, 2013 at a home daycare located at 2922 Legion Drive.
The child reported to police that the painful event took place in an upstairs bedroom.
The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration lists a licensed daycare operated by Diana New of New Castle. In a phone call with The Courier-Times, Diana New said she was located on Legion Drive, but declined further comment. The website reports that New’s current license is valid through March 31, 2017. The daycare has the capability to care for 12 children who range in age from infants to 18.
Aaron New told police he lived at the residence with his mother, but worked at the daycare to provide lawn services and snow removal, according to a probable cause affidavit. New said he had little interaction with the children, and would watch them long enough for his mom to use the restroom.
Aaron New denied the allegations, but later admitted to sodomizing the child in a daycare bathroom, the affidavit states. He entered a not guilty plea Friday in Henry Circuit Court 3, addressing Judge Bob Witham’s questions with a stutter and slight speech impediment. He told the court he had a high school diploma and completed two years of college. New said he planned to hire an attorney, but had difficulty using the jail’s phone system to contact anyone. Judge Witham said he would ask Henry County Sheriff Ric McCorkle to assist New in placing phone calls.
Friday morning, New remained incarcerated at Henry County Jail on a $2,000 cash bond, and a trial is scheduled for 9 a.m. July 13 in Henry Circuit Court 1. Witham served as the judge in Friday’s initial hearing due to Judge Willis’ absence.
If convicted, New faces 20 to 50 years in prison.
