Gregory Akers of Linden New Jersey Charged with Sexual Assault of Two Youths and Possession of Child Pornography

A city man who was the leader of a boys youth organization and a religious education teacher was arrested today for possession of 1,240 images and 43 videos of child pornography, federal authorities said.

Gregory Aker, 45, was charged with one count of possessing child pornography, U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman said in a statement today.

Fishman said Linden police first arrested Aker on Feb. 22 and charged him with the sexual assault of two minors. Aker was also charged with endangering the welfare of the two children, Fishman said.

Linden police say officers first went to Aker’s home on Feb. 22 in response to a domestic violence incident Aker’s wife. The police investigation led officers to charge Akers that same same with two counts each of sexual assault, criminal sexual contact and endangering the welfare of a child, Linden police Capt. James Sarnicki said.

Fishman subsequently searched multiple computers and electronic storage media at Aker’s home and found pornographic images and videos, “including images of prepubescent children being sexually abused,” Fishman said.

One video shows a boy’s genitals, as well as those of a man, according to the federal complaint. Another video shows a naked boy about six or eight years old, it says.

Fishman said Aker was a leader for a boys youth organization and a religious education teacher with his church. The church was not identified.

Details of the arrest by Linden police were not immediately available.

Aker is being held on the Linden charges.

The federal charges of possessing child pornography carry a maximum penalty upon conviction of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
