A Goshen teen was arrested last week after police say he had inappropriate relationships with two younger teens.
Mykal Kauffman, 19, was arrested Feb. 15 on charges of child molesting, child solicitation and two counts of sexual misconduct with a minor. He was booked at the Elkhart County Jail on $40,000 bond. He was still listed as an inmate at the jail Monday morning, Feb. 23.
An investigation began in early 2014 after a Goshen Middle School employee reported to the police that a 13-year-old student was exchanging explicit photos with a high school senior, according to court documents.
Police interviewed the student, who told them she met Kauffman, then 18, through a 14-year-old friend. She confirmed to Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department detectives that she and Kauffman sent each other explicit photos and Kauffman asked her to meet him at his house to have sex, according to court documents.
The girl said she snuck out of her house early one morning and went to Kauffman’s house, where they kissed for several minutes and Kauffman grabbed her buttocks but she told then told him to stop and went home, as reported in court documents.
Kauffman told the girl before they met that what they were doing is illegal because he was 18 years old.
Police also interviewed the 14-year-old who had introduced the 13-year-old to Kauffman, the documents state. The 14-year-old told them she’d known Kauffman for about four years and, on two occasions, went to Kauffman’s house where they had have sex and Kauffman touched her genitals.
At an initial hearing on Feb. 17, Kauffman told the court he plans to hire his own attorney. His next hearing is scheduled for March 5.
If convicted, he could face as many as 32 years in prison, according to Indiana sentencing guidelines.
