Two former Ridgeland High School coaches could face up to 30 years in prison and $20,000 in fines, if convicted on charges of sexual battery of a 15-year-old girl.
Michael L. Porter and Blair Elizabeth Porter of Brandon turned themselves in on Friday to Madison County Sheriff’s deputies.
In June, they were indicted on charges of having cunnilingus with the same minor at least twice between Oct. 1, 2013, and April 15, 2014.
The alleged victim is a 15-year-old RHS student.
Madison County Assistant District Attorney Ashley Allen said Monday that one offense took place at Ridgeland High School inside Porter’s office in the school’s press box and another occurred at the couples’ Brandon home.
The Madison County indictment, she added, applies only to the Ridgeland incident.
Allen said the mother of the teen found inappropriate text messages on her daughter’s cellular phone and contacted the Ridgeland Police Department.
An investigation ensued and instead of a probable cause hearing – which is required for educators – the case was presented directly to a grand jury.
The married couple, who had served as softball coaches at Ridgeland from 2012 until recently, posted bonds of $25,000 and $5,000. Blair’s bond was reduced, reportedly because she is seven-months pregnant.
Blair was a teacher at Old Towne Middle School.
Both pleaded not guilty in an initial court appearance Friday. Another court date has been set for February.
A grand jury indictment for charges against both were filed with Madison County Circuit Clerk Lee Westbrook’s office on June 12.
Madison County Superintendent Ronnie McGehee confirmed that the Porters are no longer employed by the school district.
Ridgeland Athletic Director Kenny Burton declined comment, but said Thursday that both of the defendants are no longer with the department and he had already named former baseball pitching coach Gerald Ray as softball coach.
