Austin public school leaders are meeting with parents on Monday and Tuesday to discuss their concerns after a teacher admitted to sexually assaulting an elementary school student.
Parents of students in Reilly Elementary School’s summer school program want to know how a teacher could have sexually assaulted a 6-year-old girl in their school.
Alfredo Andrade-Gaytan, 33, is charged with sexual assault of a child. He is a teacher at Walnut Creek Elementary School, but was working in a summer program at Reilly Elementary. He’s worked for AISD since 2005.
Police in Austin, Texas say he stopped the girl from going to recess and assaulted her inside his classroom.
When the girl reported the incident, he denied it, but police say he later admitted to the attack, telling investigators he wanted to talk to them about “making a mistake.”
At this point, police say there is no indication that there are any other victims. Police say this case is unusual in that the teacher does not fit the profile. In many cases, those that abuse children groom them over days or months to gain their trust. Police say this was Andrade-Gaytan’s first time meeting this 6-year-old girl.
