Effingham, Georgia Deputies Arrest 2 After Attempt to Commit Child Molestation

Two men have been charged with criminal attempt to commit child molestation this past week during a sting conducted by the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Douglas Shontz, 63, of Pooler met with who he thought was an underage girl at a gas station for sex, but was greeted by Effingham County Deputies. Kevin Horton, 24, of Springfield, met with who he also thought was an underage girl for sex at Bakers Pond in Springfield but was met by Effingham County Deputies.

Shontz was arrested and charged with criminal attempt to commit child molestation.

Horton was also arrested and charged with criminal attempt to commit child molestation and sexual exploitation and furnishing obscene materials to a minor.

The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office also participated in a multiagency, four-day operation in Dekalb County which netted 14 arrestees who traveled with the intent to meet a child for sex, according to a spokesperson.
